What Is rock camp:

Girls rock camp is a music and arts based camp where girls, trans, and gender non-conforming youth learn an instrument, form a band, write an original song, and perform a concert at a live music venue all within a week over summer break. Rock camps and like-minded programs exists in different parts of the world and can look a little bit different depending on where you are.Girls Rock Camp Alliance member organizations each share a desire to achieve a reality where gender and culture do not decide whether a person can play music. Until we reach that goal, rock camp is a way to provide a space for girls, trans, and gender non-conforming youth where they can identify as musicians. At rock camp, we use methods to encourage the campers’ creativity, provide a variety of different musicians and mentors as role models, and a curriculum that is a broad introduction to the world of music.GRCA organizations value diversity and strive to be as inclusive as possible. Through our annual conference, we exchange ideas, experiences, and best practices on how to fulfill our missions, serve a diverse community, and fight different forms of oppression.

Girls Rock Camp Tallahassee is not yet part of the national alliance group, we are still completely grassroots! We hope to become a part of the alliance after we host our first camp!

History Lesson:

GRCA was founded at the initiative of Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, Oregon in 2007. As the first girls rock camp, Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls became a source of inspiration for other initiatives around the world. In the spirit of wanting to create a network for all these initiatives, Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls invited organizers from the other girls rock camps in existence at the time to a conference in Portland. Seven camps were represented at the conference including 5 U.S. based camps: Willie Mae Rock Camp (New York, NY), Girls Rock Philly (Philadelphia, PA), Bay Area Girls Rock Camp (Oakland, CA), Southern Girls Rock Camp (Murfreesboro, TN), Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls (Portland, OR) and 2 European camps: Popkollo (Sweden) and Girls Rock! UK (London, UK).These organizations mutually decided that they wanted to be a part of and develop this network that was named Girls Rock Camp Alliance. At the conference they created a mission statement and laid out the basic foundation on which the GRCA is based today. The dream was to form an international network for girls rock camp organizers all over the world. The main focus of their work continues to be hosting a yearly meet-up where members of the alliance can share experiences and exchange ideas to help and inspire each other. Today there are 93 camps Worldwide, and we here in Tallahassee want to make it 94!!!
